FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dance>Detour Invited to Perform in Costa Rica
DANCE>DETOUR TO PERFORM FOR
PRESIDENT OF COSTA RICA
Chicago based Dance>Detour has been invited by the Advisory Ministry of the Presidency on Disability of the Costa Rican government to perform at the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar in San Jose for “The International Day of People with Disabilities” on December 3, 2008.
Costa Rica, one of 136 countries that has signed and ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, is proud to celebrate The International Day of People with Disabilities this year by showcasing the artistic abilities of professional artists with disabilities. For the first time, this national event will include the participation of an internationally known physically integrated performance group – Dance>Detour.
Founded by Alana Wallace in 1995, Dance>Detour is Chicago’s first professional physically integrated dance company comprised of multi-talented artists with and without disabilities. As an arts/advocacy performance company, Dance>Detour promotes equal access and inclusive dance opportunities for performers with a wide range of disabilities.
Our mission is to educate and encourage others to envision dance and performance expression through a broader lens – by expanding the concept of what dance IS and WHO can be involved. We creatively and effectively demonstrate that capable performers with disabilities EXIST and have significant contributions to make to the arts.
Dance>Detour takes great pride in the important role it plays in changing the way society perceives people with disabilities. Company member Ladonna Freidheim, whose two-year old child often attends rehearsal, says: “When my daughter sees a person in a wheelchair, she shouts, ‘Dancing!’ Wouldn’t it be great if everyone looked at people with disabilities and saw possibilities rather than impairments?” Dance>Detour is excited to share these possibilities with the people of Costa Rica during their week-long visit.
While there, Dance>Detour will continue to promote its philosophy that “Everyone Can Dance,” and that there is quality in all types of movement – far beyond typical stereotypes that a dancer must be someone of a particular age, with a certain type of body, and/or follow a uniform style of movement.
Sponsorships are needed to offset the costs of Dance>Detour’s participation in this wonderful performance and teaching opportunity in Costa Rica. Please contact artistic director Alana Wallace if you are willing to make a tax-deductible donation to the company to assist them in bringing their vision and grace to the people of Costa Rica.

I'm excited to invite you to Governor Jon Corzine's Conference on Workforce and Economic Development on December 2 and December 3, 2008 at the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City. In light of the economic crisis, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, along with our state partners, are hosting this conference to highlight many workforce and economic-related issues brewing in Washington, DC and in the state of New Jersey. The conference will highlight programs and initiatives to address the needs of New Jersey job seekers, businesses, labor unions, and faith-based and community-based organizations.
It is predicted that the state unemployment rate, which is currently at 5.8 percent, could rise above 8 percent before the end of 2009 and some economists predict that the labor market will remain flat for the next two years. This is a must-attend conference where community and business leaders can share critical economic information! On with your constituencies. This conference will expose New Jerseyans to industries where the jobs are, such as: Science and Technology, Information Technology, Biotechnology/Pharmaceuticals, and Energy/Green Jobs to name a few.
We will have speakers/panelists discussing the national and state economy, the financial crisis and its impact on New Jersey and the region, and Congressional and state legislative initiatives and upcoming agendas. For the business community, we have speakers from state agencies, such as the Economic Development Authority, the Department of Treasury, and our Division of Grants Operations to brief you on available funding from the state (grants, loans, incentive programs, etc) to grow, expand, or to assist your business with relocating to the great state of New Jersey. For faith- and community-based organizations, there will be workshops on grant writing, available state funding for literacy programs, appr! enticeship opportunities, ex-offender re-entry programs and much, much more.
The conference has 27 panels, so please visit our website (http://www.regonline.com/builder/sit...eventid=656774) and register today.
I look forward to seeing you at the Conference.
