Did you ever imagine trekking through a tropical jungle in search of that beautiful orchid? I mean, the kind of flower you have to really travel far and deep into the green abyss; the ones that only grow in the moist forest of Central and South America, or maybe in Cuba. Yes, orchids in Cuba! You no longer need to imagine the long journey needed to reach these tropical beauties. The New York Botanical Garden is bringing hundreds of exotic orchids right to your doorstep. This year the show is called “The Orchid Show, Cuba in Flower”; it promises to be a color explosion. The theme of yesterday’s Cuba runs the whole exhibition, from real palm trees to classical Cuban water fountains. All super imposed by orchids of every size, shape, scent, and color.

If you can’t wait for summer another second then go to one of the best orchid shows in the North East. The show runs until April 11, 2010, don’t miss it!

Access

The New York Botanical Garden is wheelchair/scooter accessible in all visitor areas including, arboretum, cafes, gift shops, and main exhibits. Things to note during your visit as a person with a disability:

• The orchid show runs on a set path that begins at the main entrance and eventually ends there. Individuals in mobility devices should ask for an elevator key when they arrive. The path eventually leads to an elevator/stairs one must take to reach a second level to desert plants exhibit and orchid exhibit finale.
• Some areas may be slippery due to a climate-controlled environment that keeps flowers at a comfortable temperature.
• If using a manual chair, remember this is a large space with some hilly areas.
• If walking is an issue then plan on taking a few breaks as you navigate the exhibit.
• Service animals are permitted but pets are not.

Transportation

The New York Botanical garden can be accessed by numerous modes of transportation; unlike Manhattan, it is easy to drive too and offers plenty of parking. Here is a link to the many options: http://www.nybg.org/visit/directions.php

What to Bring

There are a number of things to consider bringing or wearing while at the orchid show and the Gardens in general:

• Dress comfortably; do not wear heels or tight footwear. Consider leaving your jacket or coat in the car if you drove, the arboretum is very warm in some parts.
• Bring your camera! The orchids are placed at eye level and one can get great pictures from any angle.
• A water bottle is a must; pack one.
• Money. The gift shop offers many varieties of orchids for sale.

Food

The Garden offers an American Style Café with a variety of sandwiches, soups, drinks, and desserts. In addition, there is outdoor seating if one wishes to bring food from outside; of course this being a huge green landscape, a picnic basket can be a great accessory. The last option may be the best if you are on a tight budget. Note: for coffee lovers the Café serves coffee and espresso based drinks.

Tickets

The ticket prices area bargain compared to many other New York attractions. Think of all the money one saves by not having to take a plane trip to see these orchids.
